Students in Mrs. Cheshire’s 5th grade class investigated how the geosphere interacts with Earth’s spheres by modeling the rock cycle with Starbursts! First, students took their “rocks” and simulated weathering and erosion by cutting up the rocks to create sediments. Next, students created sedimentary rock by placing their “sediments” in a plastic bag and applied pressure to compact and cement them together. Then, Mrs. Cheshire used a hair dryer to melt their sedimentary rock into “magma.” After that, students let their magma cool which formed “igneous rock.” Lastly, Mrs. Cheshire used an iron to apply heat and pressure to change their igneous rock into “metamorphic rock!” Then, the process begins all over again and students cut their metamorphic rock back into sediments!
